Most games on XBL are priced at 10$ and I don’t feel like the extra 5 is justified in this case. Artwork is great, but gameplay is too repetitive, each level is about the same, you couldn’t play online for forever and now that its fixed everyone has moved on and is playing something else. The biggest thing that bothered me about the game is the weapon vault in the game. Even if you get every weapon available there are a ton of gaps in between the weapons where its clear the developers removed them for a later DLC cash-in. There was actually a video review out before the game was released showing some extra content like a chainsaw as well as other unlockable characters that ended up being cut from the game for later DLC. Won’t be buying another Behemoth game.

This game is fun, when played in groups. It isn’t fun to play by yourself. In addition, the simplicity of the controls and the character progression make each standard enemy encounter uninteresting. The humor is excellent, the art style and graphics are great, but they can’t make up for a game that, unfortunately, is mechanically limited.

Castle Crashers is one of those small, quirky, arcade-style games that make me glad things like XBLA exist. While I wasn’t one of the people eagerly awaiting Castle Crashers release, I certainly am a fan of The Behemoth and, more specifically, the work of Dan Paladin and Tom Fulp. Fulp has had my respect for creating Newgrounds for years, while Paladin’s art style in Alien Hominid made me a fan.

Castle Crashers has a lot of improvements over Alien Hominid that my fiancée and I really enjoy in our playthroughs. Breaking the gameplay down to stages on a map, allowing health potions, and more or less doing away with ‘Game Over’ really keeps things fun. The huge amount of characters to unlock give a decent reason to replay the game, even if many are just new skins, and leveling up our characters allow us to customize to our style of play.

My complaints are fairly limited since I pretty much knew what to expect when buying, but in general it could be nice to have the option of AI for the uncontrolled players. The overall length isn’t much either, but considering the price and the amount of character unlocks, I can live with that. Finally, sometimes it’s a little tricky to line up the Z axis just right, but that’s fairly typical with 2D beat ‘em ups. In general if you enjoyed old school brawlers like Streets of Rage, Double Dragon, Golden Axe, TMNT, and etc – this one should be for you. Play it with a friend or three, if you can.

This is one of if not the best XBLA titles. You get a lot of gameplay out of it for your money and don’t have to worry about keeping up with the game as it is a download. This is one of the best games ever for any console…really. We played it one whole summer and still go back every now and then. 3 or 4 players at a time just makes it better.
