You can put the hand controllers in them, but they aren't rugged enough for much contact if you were to duel. They're basically flashlights. It is a fantastic game, my son loves being able to use the lightsabre and my fiance who is 25 loves to play with him. This game is perfect for the little or big kid on your list!
